Tricia Spayer

What, if anything, do you expect to accomplish if you are elected as Director?

Each director has the opportunity to work in at least one specific area. In this past year that I have been a Director, I have worked with the Community Affairs Committee, helping to enhance community leaders’ training and resources. There is more work to be done in this area. During my next two years as a Director I intend to continue developing better resources, training, and a functional online community for our community leaders. Our communities are the glue that holds the Society together.

Given the increased importance of social media tools and apps, what will you do to inform members of those that are most likely critical to their future career?

STC has a solid educational program, providing webinars, certificate courses, and conferences. In addition, STC’s publications provide our members with the latest trends and technologies as they apply to technical communication. STC is our continuing education. As a Director, I will encourage the educational and publications departments to engage the experts in social media to provide relevant training and articles to our members.

How do you intend/expect to promote positive change within STC in this role? What approaches/tactics do you foresee employing? How do you see the position for which you are running impacting/aiding/driving planned or new changes/improvements within STC? Please provide examples of previous experience promoting change.

As you may be well aware, change does not happen overnight. STC does have positive, exciting plans that were planted years ago, that are just now starting to poke through the soil. Certification is an example of such a plan. Project Phoenix is an all-encompassing plan to reinvent STC as a Society, to make it stronger, more relevant, and to make STC the center of the Technical Communication universe. This is a plan that has already made headway by means of the STC web site. There is much more to come. As a Director, I am able to support these projects by whatever means possible – by getting committees involved in specific tasks, by promoting these ideas through networking, or by helping to educate our leaders to impart this knowledge to their communities.

During this past year as a Director, I helped to form the current Community Affairs Committee (CAC), of which the Leaders’ Resource Webinar series is a part. As a result, the SIG, Chapter, and Student Chapter Leaders are getting help and information quickly from their CAC representatives. In addition, the CAC representatives are bringing issues to the STC Board and Staff to be worked out effectively. I have helped propel the Leaders’ Resource Webinar series, which provides our community leaders with ongoing training. The new CAC and its efforts have just begun. As I said earlier, change does not happen overnight. I, along with my fellow CAC colleagues, have a vision of where our STC leadership development needs to be. If I am elected, I will continue on this focused journey.
