Professional Experience
As technical communicator I’ve worked with companies such as G.E. Healthcare, Alcatel, ILOG-IBM, in roles as lead writer and project manager. Very often I’ve been called on to take a role bridging our profession with another, e.g. usability, marketing, business analysis, and what is now called content strategy. My present job puts me at the center of all of these, and more.
Before getting into technical communication, I worked with some early networking companies such as The Source and CompuServe, and was active in the Electronic Networking Association where I served as program co-chair. I got into the profession via the media, especially radio. I have worked as a journalist for CBC and NPR radio networks, and served as program manager of WNYC-FM, New York City’s public radio station. I have also produced for European radios in France, Germany and Holland.
I’ve always taught communications in parallel, including at NYU, Université de Paris VII and Université de Montpellier III.
