STC Service
I currently serve as STC treasurer. At the Society level, I’ve also served on ad-hoc committees considering STC branding and tools for community PR managers.
Community Activities
At the community level, I’ve served the New York Metro, Phoenix, Southern Nevada and New Mexico Tech Student chapters in offices from treasurer to president. I’ve led such committees as employment, programs and scholarship. I’ve judged local and regional competitions, coordinated student writing contests and helped plan regional conferences.
Awards
I was named an Associate Fellow in 2004. I’ve won the Distinguished Chapter Service Award and led teams that won Distinguished and Excellence awards in the STC PR Competition. I’m also a member of the Sigma Tau Chi honorary fraternity.
Education and other (non-STC) Professional affiliations, honors, awards
I hold a B.S. in technical communication from New Mexico Tech and an M.A. in communication studies from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
I’m a member of the Public Relations Society of America and former member of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC). I’ve won IABC Bronze Quill (first) and Excellence (second) awards for newsletter/ magazine production, an IABC Merit (third) award for feature writing and a National Association of Government Communicators Blue Pencil (third) award for magazine production.
Professional Experience
I work at American Express Company as a communications director in the Technologies division. In this role, I serve as a communications consultant to the Chief Information Officer and members of the senior leadership team. I also lead project team communications for the Chief Information Security Officer. I’ve also served the company as media relations manager, coordinating media relations and PR for seven American Express business units employing more than 7,400 people in the Phoenix area.
I previously worked as a technical writer and editor. In that capacity, I developed policies, procedures, articles and reports in computer engineering, electronics, electrical engineering, environmental restoration, workplace safety, health physics and industrial hygiene. I also managed employee communications for two large government contractors that each employed more than 2,000 people at several U.S. locations.
